With a Community Shield match looming against local rivals Manchester City on Sunday, United manager Alex Ferguson reshuffled his side for the second half. A comprehensive breakdown of available cities for the 20th MLS team
MLS has come a long way from the early days, and a host of cities would love to join the growing league. Goal.com breaks down the available citiesEarlier this year, Major League commissioner Don Garber spoke about the intentions of adding a 20th franchise to Major League Soccer. Garber mentioned the lack of teams in the Southeast, and that the league only has a handful in the Midwest. While MLS has had a steady and consistent increase in teams over the last five years, having added seven during that time, Garber states the plan is for the league to eventually go beyond 20. www.goal.com/en-us/news/1110/major-league-soccer/2011/09/08/2534291/a-comprehensive-breakdown-of-available-cities-for-the-20th

Sacramento reportedly lines up expansion bid California capital Sacramento makes the case for MLS club all the expansion talk about a potential second MLS team in New York City, prepare for plenty of speculation about a fourth in California. A report this morning reveals that former California Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez, who sits on the US Soccer Federation board, is exploring the possibility of landing an MLS franchise for Sacramento, specifically the suburb of Elk Grove. "I wouldn't characterize it as a long shot, but it's an endeavor that's in its infancy," said Sacramento attorney thingy Hyde, who is one of Núñez’s partners and worked on bringing MLS to Sacramento before the league’s launch in 1996. "I think Elk Grove is probably a really good spot for soccer." www.sacbee.com/2011/12/14/4121137/group-exploring-major-league-soccer.html

Major League Soccer in Central Florida? Orlando City making conversation and taking steps. ORLANDO -- During Don Garber's state of the league address in November, the Major League Soccer commissioner targeted "probable markets for expansion" of a 20th MLS franchise. Garber mentioned Las Vegas, Detroit and "a group in Florida" as the frontrunners. The "group" he was referring to was the Orlando City Soccer Club ownership, led by Phil Rawlins. The owner and president of OCSC has met twice in the past month with Garber and other MLS officials. One meeting was at MLS headquarters in New York, and the second came at the MLS Cup Final in Los Angeles. Among the topics of discussion: The Lions inaugural season successes on and off the field, Orlando’s viability as a professional soccer market, and the franchise’s economic positioning to take that next step. Rawlins and his partners moved their USL franchise from Austin, Texas to Orlando with Major League Soccer in mind. www.baynews9.com/article/sports/2011/december/354217/

"It's not if, but when" - Don GarberI can remember a meeting very similar to this in Philadelphia a few years ago," said Don Garber, Commissioner of Major League Soccer. Philadelphia started MLS play in 2010 and is already a wildly successful franchise. After today, Orlando City is very much on MLS' list. "It's not a matter of if, but a matter of when." Those are the words, repeated several times during his media interviews after the Supporters Summit, straight from Commissioner Garber. He is fully behind Orlando City becoming an MLS team. All we have to do now is figure out the details. We're handling our end regarding the stadium solution and dealing with the City, but Commissioner Garber was quite clear - the supporters need to be involved. Garber left City fans with several suggestions on how to proceed: •Grow the fan base •Supporters need to engage more with sponsors •Grow the sponsorship base (see point 2) Other issues addressed were the status of MLS wanting a second team in New York and the possibility of a team in Miami. NY2 remains a focus for the league, but Garber also acknowledged that it will take time to get that franchise up and running. He also made it clear that MLS will not stop at 20 teams, but will not expand for expansion's sake. The league has a clear understanding of what needs to be done to become an expansion team, and Orlando City is very much on that path already www.orlandocitysoccer.com/news/index.html?article_id=737

MLS officials wrap up first exploratory visit to CarolinasOn the invitation of NASL second-division side Carolina RailHawks, Major League Soccer officials made their first formal exploratory visit on Thursday to the area of the Carolinas known as the Triangle — North Carolina cities Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. "It was a great day," RailHawks president Curt Johnson told MLSsoccer.com. "We were able to shine a light on the professional game here in the Triangle and have an open, honest discussion about the future." That discussion included MLS president Mark Abbott, NASL commissioner David Downs and owner representative Aaron Davidson, business and political leaders, as well as RailHawks season-ticket holders and general soccer fans. The day-long series of meetings and events, which included a fan Q&A and a media roundtable, was organized by the local NASL club with the intent of sparking a discussion about the future of the sport in the Carolinas and to outline the steps necessary to grow the game. www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2012/04/12/mls-officials-wrap-first-exploratory-visit-carolinas

Major League Soccer wants to play on Pier 40 The league will present a plan Thursday to a task force of the Hudson River Park Trust, which controls the pier. The pitch comes as the trust struggles to line up new revenues. Could those soccer fields on Pier 40 in the Hudson River Park be headed for a professional upgrade in the future? Representatives from Major League Soccer on Thursday will make a presentation to a Hudson River Park Trust task force, whose members include community leaders and elected officials, to discuss the possibility of putting a field on the rapidly deteriorating pier, sources familiar with meeting said. A spokesman for the trust declined comment. A Major League Soccer spokesman said its president Mark Abbott would address the task force to discuss the benefits of a stadium and what is involved in construction. The league has evaluated about 18 sites in New York City as it works on adding a 20th team. The spokesman said the league is in the early stages of looking for a site, and there is no time table for adding a squad. Orlando City Stadium DealIt's no secret that Orlando City is trying to become the next expansion franchise in Major League Soccer. But what might be a surprise is just how close the team might be to announcing plans for a new soccer-specific stadium in Orlando. While recent reports out of New York City have Mayor Bloomberg and MLS commissioner Don Garber "very close" to completing a deal to build a new $300M stadium in Flushing Meadows, Orlando City's front office has been quietly working with MLS, Orlando's Mayor, Orange County's Mayor, and private financers to finalize a plan of their own. www.scoringthird.com/2012/08/orlando-city-stadium-deal.html#more

New York Cosmos submit proposal for Queens stadiumThe New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League (NASL) announced on Wednesday that they have submitted a privately funded economic development proposal to the State of New York for a state-of-the-art 25,500-seat soccer-specific stadium in the Belmont Park area of Elmont, N.Y., on the border with Queens. The stadium is likely to cost around $400 million and would stand as the center of a proposed entertainment complex that would also include a park and smaller soccer field, while the Cosmos have included a $2.5 million pledge to develop other community soccer fields in the proposal. “We plan to develop an iconic project for the region and build a state-of-the-art stadium that will make Nassau County and the entire region proud,” said Seamus O’Brien, chairman and CEO of the Cosmos. “Belmont is an ideal location and a win-win for everyone involved. Nassau County and Elmont will realize much needed economic growth, and local residents will have a year-round premier destination they can call their own.” READ: Details of NY Cosmos stadium proposal ( newcosmosstadium.com/about) The proposal joins Major League Soccer's proposed 25,000-seat stadium in the Flushing Meadows-Corona Park area of Queens, a site MLS has identified for a potential 20th expansion team, likely to take the form of a second franchise in the New York market. www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/01/16/new-york-cosmos-submit-proposal-queens-stadium

Kick Off: New investor in tow, Orlando City focus on stadiumLeague Soccer is the goal in Central Florida, and Phil Rawlins and Orlando City SC continue making progress in their bid to become the league's latest expansion franchise. On Sunday night, the Orlando Sentinel revealed the new face in Orlando City's ownership group, the man who will eventually become the principal owner as the club continues its march toward a compelling expansion bid. That man is Brazilian entrepreneur Flávio Augusto da Silva, and he can’t wait to help Orlando join the US soccer elite. “Orlando is a very special city, because it is very close to the South American market and close to the European market, two regions that really love soccer," Augusto da Silva said. "We were researching a franchise in another place, but we believe Orlando is a really good city to invest." That investment would be become substantial should Orlando's MLS dreams come to fruition. In recent weeks, local and state government have also come out in support of the club, and the article outlined the preliminary funding plan for a soccer specific stadium. www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/02/18/kick-new-investor-tow-orlando-city-focus-stadium

With stadium bill shot down, Orlando MLS expansion bid suffers major setbackOrlando’s ongoing plans for a Major League Soccer expansion franchise took a major hit on Friday, when the Florida House of Representatives killed a bill that would have provided funding support for the a proposed MLS stadium in downtown Orlando. The bill also killed the funding for renovations to Miami’s Sun Life Stadium, widely considered the home to an MLS franchise if the league someday ventures back into South Florida. “We are bitterly disappointed that House Bill #7127 reached in impasse in the HOR today,” the Orlando City Soccer Club tweeted out Friday night. “We will continue to work to bring MLS to Orlando.” www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/05/04/stadium-bill-shot-down-orlando-mls-expansion-bid-suffers-major-setback
