(apologies if this is redundant to some other thread, but I can't find anything similar.... I am known to miss the obivous, though, so....)
Since MLS announced that it will have 18 teams by 2011, which cities would you like to see awarded franchises and why? Also, do you think MLS should continue expanding past 18 teams, and if so, when?

My top choice would have to be STL. Its got a great soccer fan base and their known for their support of our USNT. Vancouver is a strong candidate though. If 2 teams are added, it will be those two.

I think the MLS should stop at 18 for now.....maybe expand to 20 in the far future. But 18 sounds good to me.

ooo ooo who voted STL + Portland? =-) actually, I guess we haven't heard from two people, as four votes are unaccounted for: Las Vegas, Portland, a STL, and a Vancouver so who voted what, and why? ^.^
((Charleston USL-1 through to the Open Cup final, btw))

So, the deadline for bids is Wednesday. Anyone not voted yet/hasn't explained their votes/wants to change their vote(s)?

- Atlanta - Arthur Blank
- Miami - FC Barcelona and Marcelo Claure
- Montreal - The Saputo and Gillett Families
- Ottawa - Eugene Melnyk
- Portland - The Paulson Family
- St. Louis - Investment group led by Jeff Cooper
- Vancouver - Greg Kerfoot, Steve Nash and Jeff Mallett
3 Canadian teams geez.. Chances are at least 1 more canadian team will be added. Most likely, Vancouver. I'd really like to see STL get a team but Miami is now putting up some competition. The Barcelona brand will definitely help them......I just hope if they are chosen as an expansion team, that they will not be called "Barcelona USA"

Yeah.... I think the two slots will go to some pair from {Atlanta, Miami, Canada}. STL really deserves a team but this time I think we really are outmuscled, and not in a surprise-one-two kind of way like before. I guess we could settle for a USL team and build from there.... <sigh> But yeah, my sense is that the Miami team would be called "Barcelona USA" or "Barca Miami" or something like that. Makes even less sense than "Chivas USA" since Barcelona is a city and not a nickname, but w/e, I actually wouldn't mind.

I like Barca Miami better than Barcelona USA. Here's my evaluation on the expansions chances.
Atlanta - no chance Miami - Very good chance what with the Barca brand name bringing in the dough. Montreal - Not likely Ottawa - not the strongest Canadian candidate. Portland - MLS likes the idea of having a Sounders v Portland rivalry. STL - I would love this choice, but if one Canadian team is almost certainly going through, Miami might beat STL out. Vancouver - Most likely of the three Canadian teams. And you know MLS will be bringing in one Canadian team.

Vegas? I guess it would be ok what with the growing population. I read somewhere the MLS plans to expand to like 25 teams which is a LOT so, vegas could have a chance.

I think 25 teams would be nice (or 24 - then the numbers would work out really nicely, three conferences of eight - one game against all other teams and more more against all teams in your conference totals 30). BUT I would say that MLS should NOT add more than one team per year. And even that might be pushing it.
I assume you mean Pittsburgh when you say Pit - which I think would be okay.... but Vegas before any of the other current candidates? That's a pipe dream IMO. (That, and neither of those cities are in the group of seven that officially submitted bids for 2011)

24 teams isn't too bad I guess. But I really don't like the idea of conferences. I say scrap it and have one huge single table.
