David Beckham Has Key Link to New York Cosmos MLS Bid The principals behind the Cosmos are English. Chairman Paul Kemsley is an investment banker and former director at Tottenham who engineered the purchase of the Cosmos name and logo from G. Peppe Pinton, the former general manager of the NASL incarnation. CEO Carl Johnson runs a marketing and advertising company with offices in London and on Broadway. Cosmos director of soccer Terry Byrne held back-room positions with both Chelsea and the England national team in the 1990s. -- Byrne is one of David Beckham's best friends and played a key role in Beckham's move to the Galaxy and several key decisions once the famous midfielder arrived, such as the hiring of Ruud Gullit as coach and the inheritance of the captaincy from Landon Donovan. In his book "The Beckham Experiment," Grant Wahl described Byrne as Beckham's "personal manager" and "the unidentified figure who was almost always in Beckham's immediate orbit." Beckham apparently arranged for Byrne to work for the Galaxy as a "paid consultant." Byrne's actual high-level pro soccer experience has been limited to roles as a physical therapist and equipment manager. -- Beckham's contract with the Galaxy, which will pay him $6.5 million this season, expires at the end of 2011. The deal includes a provision allowing Beckham to be an investor/owner in an MLS franchise once he's done playing. "I still want to be involved. I want to be an ambassador of the league," he said last year. "There's a deal in place where I can purchase an MLS team or start a franchise. It's something I am definitely interested in, or I wouldn't have it in my contract." soccer.fanhouse.com/2010/08/03/david-beckham-has-key-link-to-new-york-cosmos-mls-bid/

We recently announced some changes within our coaching structure, and are now pleased to announce a change to the organizational structure of the Club as a whole. LAFC’s Academy teams have joined forces with The New York Cosmos and will now be known as Cosmos Academy – West. The Club will now be known as LAFC Cosmos. With this new affiliation, LAFC Cosmos will continue to work with the Directors and Coaches of Cosmos Academy – West to create the best youth soccer program in the southland. This new relationship will benefit both the Girls’ and Boys’ programs of LAFC Cosmos as we will have direct access to The New York Cosmos’ camps and clinics, and we will be developing programs that bridge a relationship to the Girls and Boys programs of the equivalent Club on the East -- the Queens, NY club BW Gottschee (now known as BWG Cosmos.) The New York Cosmos’ intention to be the 20th team in the MLS, and meetings with Don Garber have progressed very positively, and financing is in place to build a stadiumUltimately, the process will take as long as necessary to get an agreement to build a soccer-specific stadium. MLS officials are known to favor Queens as the franchise’s home, and it would make sense to build something in the Willets Point area, close to Citi Field. Cosmos director of soccer Terry Byrne said the club has the financing in place to build a stadium. www.northjersey.com/sports/pro_sports/other_sports/105585638_Rebirth_of_the_Cosmos_is_possible.html

BORN AGAIN: The New York Cosmos Take The Field For The First Team In 25 Years FAMILIAR COLORS RETURN TO THE FIELDThis weekend I had the pleasure of witnessing the new New York Cosmos, in the form of the team’s new U18 Cosmos Academy East squad, take the field competitively for the first time in 25 years. A product of the Cosmos’ acquisition of the Blau Weiss Gottschee youth soccer program, the U18 side played host to the South Central Premier Soccer Club’s U18 team from Branford, CT. One of the oldest and most competitive youth travel programs in New York City, BW Gottschee has always produced quality teams at all levels. However, the Queens-based program is distinguished by its reputation as the club for players serious about pursuing the game professionally – or at least seeking a college scholarship. As a result, a lot of the top talent from other local travel teams eventually migrate to Gottschee’s U16, U17, and U18 ranks. Though most of the kids who took to the field in Cosmos colors came up through the Gottschee program. www.bigsoccer.com/forum/blog.php?b=10554

The New York Cosmos continue to make waves. After Cobi Jones, another soccer legend joins the club in advance of an MLS expansion bid: ex-Manchester United great Éric Cantona is the new Cosmos director of soccer. Check out the accompanying photos on the club site ( www.nycosmos.com/). The Frenchman makes a shock return to football today as Director of Soccer at New York Cosmos. He said: "I am very honoured to join the legendary New York Cosmos. It's a big project, a wonderful project. "The Cosmos are very strong, beautifully made, with a great past. It's kind of a mix between football and art." Cantona vows to restore the glory days of the five-times champions and help build them into one of the world's best clubs. He said: "I will do everything I can to help us first find our way to regain the No 1 position in the United States, and then for us to become one of the best clubs in the world." Kick Off: Prospective owners want MLS in Detroit by 2013
Group wants to bring MLS to the Motor City in two years June 7, 2011 Tuesday night won’t be the last time that Landon Donovan is seen walking the streets of Detroit in a Tigers cap if a prospective MLS ownership group has its way. The group that has been in talks with MLS about a team in Detroit is so bullish about its chances to bring pro soccer to the Motor City that they say: “If New York's not in for 2013, we think that would be our year. I'd say in the next two years, we'll hopefully be in the league." They say renovations to the Silverdome, which they recently purchased, will take place in the next six to eight months. www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2011/06/08/kick-prospective-owners-want-mls-detroit-2013

It would be very interesting to see it when completed.... they're essentially turning this upper deck into a stadium and the bottom deck into an arena: it makes sense in a weird way. The idea of a stadium that's essentially on top of a building is just so bizarre, just imagine this but a field instead of the dome
