RUMOR: BECKHAM WILL MEET CLAURE @heat'S GAMEMIAMI, May 28 (Reuters) - Former England captain David Beckham will visit Miami this week as he steps up his interest in owning a new Major League Soccer (MLS) team. Beckham, who played for L.A. Galaxy in the MLS, has an option to create a new franchise in the North American league. While the exact location is still to be decided, he will be in the Florida city to explore possibilities, according to former Miami mayor Manny Diaz. Then, Spanish giants Barcelona, together with Miami-based Bolivian billionaire Marcelo Claure, tried to start a team but the project was called off due to "adverse market conditions". A supporters group, calling itself MLS Miami Bid, told Reuters that Claure would be one of those meeting Beckham and that the pair planed to watch Miami Heat's NBA playoff game against the Indiana Pacers on Thursday. sports.yahoo.com/news/soccer-beckham-visit-miami-quest-mls-team-ownership-215618171.html

Beckham buzz grows: soccer star tours Miami stadiums, meets mayorDavid Beckham toured Sun Life Stadium Saturday morning, and then visited FIU Stadium for an hour and a half, signs that he has more than just a passing interest in Miami as a Major League Soccer expansion city. While at FIU, Beckham was greeted by Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez, who gave him and his manager Simon Fuller keys to the city. FIU Athletic Director Pete Garcia led Beckham on a tour of the stadium, and then the school made a formal power point presentation over lunch, touting FIU’s location, 20,000-seat soccer-ready stadium, and its largely Hispanic soccer-loving student population. Orlando City hire former special assistant to Don Garber, renew hope to bring MLS to Orlando by 2015 When it comes to Major League Soccer expansion, Orlando City SC simply will not go away, seemingly until they're officially announced as the league's newest addition. We know they've got the budding fanbase, a superior USL PRO on-field product and a deep-pocketed owner, but they may have just added their greatest ace in the hole to date. The Orlando club announced on Wednesday that Brett Lashbrook, former special assistant to MLS Commissioner Don Garber, has joined the Orlando City front office and will spearhead the organization's push to securing a place at the MLS table. Lashbrook will be tasked with negotiating the expansion agreement with MLS, which will likely be contingent upon his other major duty: getting a new soccer-specific stadium built in Orlando. www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/06/05/orlando-city-hire-former-special-assistant-don-garber-renew-hope-bring-mls-o

If Orlando City join MLS in 2015, coach says Kaka will be a LionMLSsoccer.com passed along word that world soccer superstar and current Real Madrid midfielder Kaká attended the training session of USL PRO side Orlando City SC. And in doing so, were maybe even first on the Internet to speculate that Kaká might make a whole lot of sense as the club's first ever Designated Player if the third-division side makes the jump to MLS in 2015 as they hope to do. Many scoffed and laughed at the idea. Understandably so, I suppose. So here's where we're at as of the following Wednesday morning: Orlando City head coach Adrian Heath did a morning interview with local television network WFTV 9 anchor Christian Bruey, during which, according to Bruey, he said flat out that if MLS is in Orlando in 2015, Kaká will be an Orlando City Lion. www.reddit.com/tb/1gnugo

Has Detroit thrown its hat into the ring for MLS expansion? The owners of the Pontiac Silverdome from paving the way for the potential of a stadium in the city — which could bring an MLS club to the city's downtown. Toronto-based Triple Properties Inc. submitted a bid for the Wayne County justice department in hopes of acquiring five justice properties with a vision at developing a 275,000 square foot retail complex and a stadium that could lure a franchise to Detroit. Triple Properties has been eyeing the addition of an MLS franchise to Detroit since the company acquired the Silverdome four years ago. The addition of a Detroit City FC would certainly spice things up in the Midwest region of the US, where Sporting Kansas City, Chicago Fire and Columbus Crew reside. There's also the potential for a solid rivalry with Toronto FC, featuring unique commuting possibilities. www.reddit.com/tb/1j1ld5

Major League Soccer to expand to 24 teams by 2020 season, says Commissioner Don GarberKANSAS CITY, Kan. – Think 20 was the magic number? Think bigger. Major League Soccer plans to add another four teams by the 2020 season, Commissioner Don Garber announced at halftime during the broadcast of Wednesday night’s AT&T All-Star Game at Sporting Park. The league had previously held to the idea that a 20-team league was the sweet spot for the foreseeable future. MLS has added 10 clubs since the beginning of the 2005 season, and the recent addition of New York City FC – who begin play in 2015 – will bring the league to 20. “These expansion clubs have brought new ideas that have contributed to our strategy for growing the league and the addition of new markets has expanded our geographic reach while increasing our fan base,” Garber said in a league press release. Wednesday’s news gives immediate hope to several markets looking to break into the league, such as Orlando, Miami, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Detroit and Sacramento, to name a few – several of whom had representatives presenting to the MLS Board of Governors here on Wednesday afternoon. MLS has engaged in exploratory discussions with multiple markets and potential owners regarding future expansion, according to the statement. The league will unveil a process during the coming months that will detail the procedure and timing for future expansion. www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/07/31/major-league-soccer-expand-24-teams-2020-season-says-commissioner-don-garber

Orlando City owners confident they have winning expansion formulaKANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The conversation and speculation as this week's MLS All-Star break came to a close in Kansas City focused on 2020 and the four expansion clubs that the league intends to add in time for its silver anniversary season. One of them most likely will belong to retired midfielder David Beckham, who has pledged to exercise his option to purchase a team and has made no secret of his focus on Miami. The remaining cities that have expressed interest, from a top-ten market like Atlanta to a major league newcomer like Oklahoma City, now have a timeline, a target and an invitation to proceed. The roadmap has been laid out. But it is one in which Orlando City owners Flávio Augusto da Silva and Phil Rawlins have no interest. They're not concerned with putting together a package that will sway the MLS board of governors five or six years down the road. They're not worried about fulfilling the league's increasingly stringent expansion criteria. They're not challenged with the onerous prospect of establishing a brand, relationships or momentum at home. Da Silva, Rawlins and City are anxious and eager. And they're almost ready Read More: sportsillustrated.cnn.com/soccer/news/20130801/orlando-city-expansion-mls/#ixzz2apRGPJK4

MLS Expansion Musings: Potential Schedule FormatsWith season ticket renewals going out around the league, it has been confirmed that the schedule will stay at 34 games for 2014. When NYCFC joins the league the following year the Eastern Conference, which already has one more team than the West, will need to shed some weight. The obvious answer is to send Houston back to the Western Conference, their home before 2011 when the arrival of Portland and Vancouver last necessitated a balancing of the conferences. However, the potential arrival of Orlando in the league as early as 2015, as mooted in this SI article last month, could throw a wrench into that plan. Twenty teams is an easy number to split up, but twenty-one, twenty-two, and twenty-three are much more complicated. www.stumptownfooty.com/2013/9/17/4737772/mls-expansion-musings
