On Tuesday, IMS contributor Jay Long broke Esteban Pagán’s story of River Plate Puerto Rico’s financial troubles to the English speaking audience who follow lower level soccer in the US, Canada and the Caribbean. Previously, Long had reported on other financial difficulties with USL PRO teams Puerto Rico United and Sevilla-Puerto Rico. Trying to understand the passion but also the politics involved with soccer in Puerto Rico is not easy. Soccer has not always been the number one sport of this island nation who love sports. The teams that were involved with USL PRO, Puerto Rico United, River Plate Puerto Rico and Sevilla-Puerto Rico, were deemed the organizations with the best opportunity to succeed beside the Islanders who had moved from the USL to the NASL after last season. The three teams were to play games in the Puerto Rican Soccer League (PRSL) and USL PRO. Games played against each other would count for both leagues. Later Tuesday morning the USL released a statement confirming that the three USL PRO teams from Puerto Rico who had played in the International Division had been removed from USL PRO. www.insidemnsoccer.com/2011/05/11/united-soccer-leagues-president-tim-holt-answers-questions-about-3-puerto-rican-teams-removed-from-usl-pro/

USOC Recap: USL side Richmond upset Sporting KC 2-0
Match goes downhill for Sporting after thunder and lightning delay CITY, Kan. — For 65 minutes on Tuesday night, it looked like Sporting Kansas City were a goal away from moving on to their first US Open Cup semifinal since 2004. Then came the rain, the thunder and the lightning. After more than an hour waiting in the locker rooms for the weather to clear, Sporting gave up two goals to the Richmond Kickers — the first just seconds after play resumed — and lost their first game since May 21, 2-1 at Livestrong Sporting Park, to crash out of the domestic cup in the quarterfinals. Richmond move on to face the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park on Aug. 30. Sporting will look to continue their 10-game unbeaten streak in league play on Saturday against the Houston Dynamo. www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2011/07/13/usoc-recap-usl-side-richmond-upset-sporting-kc-2-0

Orlando, Harrisburg To Meet For Title
USL PRO Championship to be decided on FOX SoccerTAMPA, Fla. – Orlando City will face the Harrisburg City Islanders for the USL PRO Championship after both sides advanced from their respective division finals this weekend. The Lions will host the contest at the Florida Citrus Bowl on Saturday night, with the game set to be aired by FOX Soccer at 7 p.m. EDT. The City Islanders were the first side to book their place in the championship game with a 2-1 victory against the Rochester Rhinos in the National Division Final on Friday night at Sahlen’s Stadium. In a hard-fought affair, first-half goals by Stephen Basso and David Schofield were enough for Harrisburg to advance to its first USL championship game since 2007, their only prior trip to a title game. The City Islanders won that contest in a penalty shootout, 8-7 against the Richmond Kickers after the two teams had played to a 1-1 draw through regulation and overtime. The Lions reached the championship game with a 3-0 victory against the Kickers in the American Division Final on Saturday night in front of an electric crowd of 8,304 fans at the Florida Citrus Bowl. Luke Boden and Jerome Mecheck each scored in the first half for Orlando, which will be making its first appearance in a USL championship game. uslpro.uslsoccer.com/home/556865.html
