Akron claims first-ever NCAA championshipSANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The third time is the charm for the University of Akron. After two NCAA College Cup final defeats, the title has come at long last for the Zips and head coach Caleb Porter. A goal by New England Revolution youth product Scott Caldwell was the difference as No. 3 Akron defeated top-ranked Louisville Cardinals 1-0 on Sunday to earn the college championship trophy. In the 75th minute of play, Caldwell fired twice to beat Louisville ‘keeper Andre Bourdeax from close range. The midfielder’s first shot deflected off a Cardinals defender, but Caldwell pounced on the rebound and his second effort found the top of the net. With just moments to play, the Cardinals failed to pull even, missing a pair of golden opportunities to tie the match. First, Louisville forward Buck Tufty fired a shot that was saved by the Akron goalkeeper David Meves. Just seconds later, Aaron Horton – the last-minute hero for the Cardinals in their two previous matches – had a chance at an empty net, but defender Chad Barson cleared the shot off the line to preserve the Zips’ lead. www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/akron-claims-first-ever-ncaa-championship

Akron's Nagbe wins Hermann TrophyZips forward receives top college honor after historic seasonThe University of Akron’s Darlington Nagbe was recognized as the top player in the NCAA Division 1 on Friday, receiving the coveted Hermann Trophy award. The Zips product topped fellow junior forwards Will Bruin from Indiana University and the University of Louisville’s Colin Rolfe to take home the prize. Nagbe, who also can play in the midfield, helped Akron capture their first-ever NCAA title in 2010, topping Louisville in the College Cup Final. He scored seven goals and tallied 13 assists in 25 starts all season. He becomes the second consecutive Akron player to win the award after current Sporting Kansas City and US national team striker Teal Bunbury received it last year. The Hermann Trophy is handed out by the Missouri Athletic Club to the nation’s top male and female players in NCAA D-1 soccer. The winners are decided by votes from the coaches whose programs are members of the NSCAA. www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/akrons-nagbe-wins-hermann-trophy
