I'm not too keen on Italy showing off... let's hope England can get one... we'll let USA get one eventually!

forget England.... I want Spain to get one ^.^
and as per the US winning the World Cup.... it's a great dream, but I don't think it'll happen. Even if our homegrown talent levels doubles, soccer's never going to be our #1 national sport, so most other countries will always have the 1-up on us in tight situations like that. Also, we have the luxury here of not being publicly ridiculed and reviled if we support some other national team. The US had the chance to do so while it was a world superpower; now that that time is ending, I don't think we'll ever be able to muster a team strong enough to win a final (basically, our time on the world stage - political, economic, or athletic - is over). That being said, I firmly see the US making it to 2nd by the time my kids start playing. ;-D

back in the old days the NASL was stunningly popular...you'd be a fool not to call it one of america's sports. But the league flopped soccer in the united states went with it. Its a shame really...but soccer has somewhat picked up since. I wouldn't go as far as ruling out soccer here in the US. Look our infrastructure is one of the best in the world in terms of facilities and so forth so there's no reason why home grown players couldn't achieve that highest level of play. Its just a matter of getting the sport to be more popular. Imagine if the same effort that went into high school football also went into soccer.
