World Cup: Group seeds are set for FIFA World Cup Draw on December 6 in Bahia[/size] The eight seeds for the 2014 World Cup groups are set. The October edition of the FIFA World Rankings were released on Thursday and the top seven teams on the list will be joining Brazil in Pot 1 when the World Cup draw takes place on December 6 in Bahia. Spain (No. 1), Germany (No. 2), Argentina (No. 3), Colombia (No. 4), Belgium (No. 5), Uruguay (No. 6) and Switzerland (No. 7) are the other seven nations that will join the hosts as top seeds. But there's a catch: If Uruguay do not advance to the 2014 World Cup after their intercontinental playoff against Jordan (ranked No. 70) in November, the Netherlands (No. 8) would take their spot. The big move was made by Switzerland, who jumped seven spots from last month's ranking after wins over Slovenia and Albania earned them first place in their group in Europe (above). Their rise also bumped Italy, whose home draw vs. Armenia saw them drop to No. 9 and outside the World Cup seeding range. www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/10/17/world-cup-group-seeds-are-set-fifa-world-cup-draw-december-6-bahia

MLS referee Mark Geiger, three other PRO officials selected for 2014 World CupVeteran MLS referee Mark Geiger has been selected to take part in this summer's FIFA World Cup, marking the first such call for a US referee in more than a decade. Geiger will be joined by assistant referees Sean Hurd and Joe Fletcher (Canada), one of 25 trios and eight “support duos” from 43 countries selected by the FIFA Referee Committee to officiate the action in Brazil. US referee Eric Boria will also make the trip as one half of a support duo alongside Mexico's Roberto Moreno-Salazar. Beyond those officials, CONCACAF is also represented by a Salvadoran trio, a Mexican trio and a Central American support duo of Walter Alexander López Castellanos (Guatemala) and Leonel Leal Bermúdez (Costa Rica). www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2014/01/15/mls-referee-mark-geiger-three-other-pro-officials-selected-2014-world-cup

Brazil 3, Croatia 1: 2014 FIFA World Cup | Group A It may not have been a thing of beauty, but with the weight of an entire nation riding on their backs, Brazil managed to rise to victory over Croatia in the pageantry-filled opener of the 2014 World Cup. And who else but Brazil's shining star, Neymar, whose two goals – the second on a generously given penalty – on either side of halftime gave the host country a 3-1 decision Thursday night at Arena Corinthians in São Paulo in Group A action, capped by an insurance goal delivered in stoppage time by Oscar. matchcenter.mlssoccer.com/matchcenter/2014-06-12-brazil-vs-croatia/recapMexico 1, Cameroon 0: 2014 FIFA World Cup | Group A Mexico got their 2014 World Cup off to a strong start with a convincing 1-0 victory over Cameroon on Friday in the Estadio das Dunas in Natal. www.mlssoccer.com/worldcup/2014/news/article/2014/06/13/mexico-cameroon-match-recap

Chile 3, Australia 1: 2014 FIFA World Cup | Group B It was more difficult for Chile than anyone – except apparently Australia – anticipated, but La Roja hung on for a 3-1 victory after taking a two-goal lead over a plucky Socceroos side Friday night at the Arena Pantanal in Cuiaba. The tournament’s dark horse contender in many minds, Chile wasted no time in jumping the Tim Cahill-led Australians with a 12th-minute goal by star striker Alexis Sanchez, followed by a 14th-minute Jorge Valdivia goal. A Cahill header goal in the 35th minute gave Australia life as they evenly battled Chile until the end in the Group B opener for both teams, the killer goal coming from Jean Beausejour in second-half stoppage time. matchcenter.mlssoccer.com/matchcenter/2014-06-13-chile-vs-australia/recapColombia 3, Greece 0: 2014 FIFA World Cup | Group C Colombia made the most of their first World Cup appearance in 16 years, riding goals from Pablo Armero, Teofilo Gutierrez, and James Rodriguez to a 3-0 rout over Greece in the Group C opener on Saturday at Estadio Mineirao in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. matchcenter.mlssoccer.com/matchcenter/2014-06-14-colombia-vs-greece/recap

Ivory Coast 2, Japan 1: 2014 FIFA World Cup | Group C Powered by two goals scored in a two-minute span in the second half, the Ivory Coast overturned an early Keisuke Honda goal to beat Japan 2-1 in Recife on Saturday night. Both goals were virtually identical: two crosses by right back Serge Aurier and headers by Wilfried Bony and Gervinho. They were enough to bury Japan, who could muster little in terms of a response. matchcenter.mlssoccer.com/matchcenter/2014-06-14-ivory-coast-vs-japan/recap

England 1, Italy 2: 2014 FIFA World Cup | Group D In a battle of traditional heavyweights, the heavier of the two came out on top. Four-time world champions Italy topped one-time winners England, 2-1, on Saturday in FIFA World Cup Group D action amid the heat and humidity of Manaus. Claudio Marchisio and Mario Balotelli struck for gli Azzurri, while Daniel Sturridge hit for England. matchcenter.mlssoccer.com/matchcenter/2014-06-14-england-vs-italy/recap
