RFK Stadium lease extension
Events DC and D.C. United announce RFK Stadium lease extension Events DC and D.C. United today announced an agreement for the team to play its home games at RFK Stadium for the 2012 and 2013 seasons. RFK Stadium has served as the team's home stadium since its inception in 1996. Capacity for Major League Soccer matches at RFK Stadium during this lease will be limited to the Mezzanine level and lower seating bowl. Full sale of the 19,647 seats for any of United's League fixtures will constitute a sellout. D.C. United has also added a premium seating opportunity adjacent to the home team bench and has additional premium seating plans in development. "The intention is to cover the upper deck seating area of the stadium for MLS games and we are presently discussing that opportunity with several prospective sponsors," explained Payne. "It's a great branding opportunity, but it's more important that our supporters become accustomed to a 20,000 seat stadium, and we expect that limiting the capacity will encourage an increase in season ticket sales." www.dcunited.com/press-release/2012/03/rfk-stadium-lease-extension

Payne: DCU could begin new stadium construction next year"D.C. United appear to be inching ever closer to an exit from RFK Stadium, and the club could begin construction on a new stadium sometime in 2013, according to club president and CEO Kevin Payne. Payne and head coach Ben Olsen appeared on WAMU radio’s popular Kojo Nnamdi Show on Wednesday to discuss a number of issues surrounding the club, perhaps none more important than the idea of where and when D.C. will finally suit up in a soccer-specific stadium. www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2012/08/03/payne-dc-could-begin-new-stadium-construction-next-year

Report: DC zeroing in on Buzzard Point for new stadiumD.C. United are no longer considering Baltimore for a new stadium, and that's because talks are progressing well with the D.C. Council on a proposed stadium at Buzzard Point, in the city's Southwest section. That's the take-away from an exclusive report by The Washington Post's Steven Goff on Friday. “Interaction with the city has been very positive and very productive,” United managing partner Jason Levien told Goff. “We’re pushing the right buttons and making things happen in a good way. … There is more than hope. We are very hopeful.” The push for a new stadium for the Black-and-Red has gained traction in the last seven months since Levien and Erick Thohir, an Indonesian businessman, joined Will Chang as the team's investors/operators. The added capital, plus Levein's political savvy – he's worked in Washington for the Democratic party, as well as practicing law with Williams & Connolly – seems to have cleared away many of the roadblocks that have stalled all proposed stadium projects in D.C. for more than a decade www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/02/15/report-united-zeroing-buzzard-point-new-stadium

D.C. mayor to announce “tentative” deal on new stadium for DC UnitedHearing news of a new Major League Soccer stadium is usually a somewhat joyous occasion, particularly when that news concerns the franchise with the greatest need for a new venue. But that team, D.C. United, have been down this road so often that any mention of “tentative,” “preliminary,” “hinges on,” “have not been finalized,” or “would require approval” reminds us that D.C. fans have developes a kind of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder from a decade of empty speculation. Only time will tell if that syndrome ever goes away, but per the Washington Post’s reporting, there could be a cure come 2016, with D.C. mayor Vincent Gray reportedly ready to announce a new venue at Buzzard’s Point. prosoccertalk.nbcsports.com/2013/07/24/sound-familiar-d-c-mayor-to-announce-tentative-deal-on-new-stadium-for-united/
