They never touch the ball but play a massive role in every match. But who exactly are the referees? When’s the last time you’ve heard from a referee? What do you know about any single referee? Or about what their job is really all about? And this year they have been in the spotlight like no other year for controversies that have touched a nerve with players, coaches, and fans alike. This week at MLSsoccer.com we’re going to go where no media outlet has ever gone, delving into the issues, the personalities and the lives of the referees. Ref Week: So what is MLS doing to develop officials? (Pt. 1)
![](http://www.mlssoccer.com/sites/league/files/imagecache/620x350/image_nodes/2011/10/stott.jpg) 2011 has marked a year of fundamental change for MLS refsGet them started early. Provide them with top quality training. Give them high-level competitions and you’ll start seeing the results. Those are just some of the primary conclusions about refereeing in North America drawn from lengthy sit-down interviews and correspondence with administrators and executives leading North America’s referee program. Upsetting the status quo Many may believe that the referee set-up in North America is archaic and resistant to change. But radical modifications and developments are occurring at a rapid pace. Take, for example, this year. For the first time, fixed teams of officials were set up for the majority of the 2011 MLS season. Each team consists of a senior referee, a sophomore official, a rookie whistle, three assistant referees and a rookie fourth. www.mlssoccer.com/referee/news/article/2011/10/11/referee-week-so-what-mls-doing-develop-officials-pt-1

The Deciders It's not easy being a ref – here are the 5 hardest calls to make![](http://www.mlssoccer.com/sites/league/files/imagecache/620x350/image_nodes/2011/10/collina.jpg) We’ve all done it: We rise with purpose as a defender brings down an attacker breaking in on goal, proclaiming with authority, “Red card! He was the last defender!” But that’s easy for us to say. We’re not the man on the spot, the referee who is about to make a massive decision, one that will surely change the game – and in some cases alter careers or club fortunes. And the truth is, showing red in this scenario isn’t some arbitrary judgment call; there’s more to consider than most observers probably understand. In the parlance of referees and soccer geeks, it’s called “DOGSO” – denial of goal-scoring opportunity. It’s one of the hardest decisions a referee must render, but hardly the only toughie. Here are five of the most difficult calls for the (frequently embattled) men in the middle. www.mlssoccer.com/referee/news/article/2011/10/11/talking-tactics-five-toughest-calls-game

Ref Week: So what is MLS doing to develop officials? (Pt. 2) Amid controversy, 2011 a year of change for MLS refs![](http://www.mlssoccer.com/sites/league/files/imagecache/620x350/image_nodes/2011/10/kennedy.jpg) We continue with Part II of our look at officiating in North America, and dig specifically at what MLS has done to try to address the pressing issues as identified by league officials, players, coaches, GMs and more. (Click here to read Part I.) Points of Emphasis At the start of the 2011 season, we saw how serious the theme of officiating became for MLS with the public unveiling of the “Points of Emphasis,” which were shared with coaches, players and referees ahead of the launch of the season. Developed in conjunction with the US and Canadian federations, these were areas of the game that needed to be addressed and they ranged from reckless tackles to offside calls. www.mlssoccer.com/referee/news/article/2011/10/11/ref-week-so-what-mls-doing-develop-officials-pt-2
