An own-goal in the eighth minute and Gerson Lima's insurance tally in the 35th paced "Los Chapines" before a home crowd, which had to sit through 18½ minutes of darkness in the second half when half of the six lighting towers lost power U.S. overwhelms Suriname 4-0 to open U-20s GUATEMALA CITY - First-half goals by Bobby Wood, Joe Gyau and Conor Doyle sparked the United States to a 4-0 victory over Suriname on Tuesday in the opening game for both at the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship. The Americans, trying for an eighth consecutive trip to the U-20 World Cup, controlled the match from the start, hitting the post twice in the opening 45 minutes in addition to jumping ahead 3-0. The loss eliminated the French Caribbean island, playing in the CONCACAF finals for only the second time and first since 1992 Cuba-Trinidad draw sends Mexico to U-20 QFsGUATEMALA CITY - Caribbean rivals Cuba and Trinidad & Tobago played to a 0-0 draw Wednesday at the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship, assuring Mexico of a quarterfinal berth. It was the second time in three days that Cuba was held without a goal, leaving its knockout-round fate depending on the result of the Group D finale between Trinidad and Mexico. Waterman’s three leads Panama past SurinameGUATEMALA CITY - Cecilio Waterman's three goals gave Panama a 3-0 victory over Suriname on Thursday, sending "Los Canaleros" into the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship along with the United States. It was the second loss in as many games without scoring a goal for Suriname, the last team to qualify for the 12-team field and which has failed to get past the first round in five trips to the CONCACAF finals. The United States, which beat Suriname 4-0 on Tuesday, will face Panama on Saturday to decide the Group B title and seeding for the knockout round. Honduras reaches U-20 quarters with 2-1 victory GUATEMALA CITY - Alexander Lopez converted a dramatic 30-meter free kick in the 77th minute to complete Honduras' rally for a 2-1 victory over Jamaica on Thursday, sending it to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship. Ever Alvarado also scored for "Los Catrachos", whose victory also assured host Guatemala of a place in the knockout round. Jamaica, which lost to Guatemala 2-0 on Tuesday, was eliminated, the third of five Caribbean teams to be sent home. Mexico routs Trinidad, Cuba qualifies for U-20 QFsGUATEMALA CITY - Taufic Guarch scored three goals and hit the post another time to lead Mexico a 5-0 victory over Trinidad & Tobago on Friday, eliminating the "Young Warriors" and earning Cuba a place in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship. Mexico already had clinched a berth in the knockout round and Friday's rout clinched the Group D title, pitting it against Canada in Tuesday's quarterfinals. Group D's other berth went to Cuba, which -- by virtue of losing only 3-0 to Mexico - advanced on goal difference over Trinidad. It will play Costa Rica in Tuesday's other quarterfinal. Ten-man Honduras tops Guatemala 3-1 in U-20s
GUATEMALA CITY - Nestor Martinez scored one goal and helped out on two more, leading a 10-man Honduras past host Guatemala 3-1 on Saturday and to a quarterfinal meeting against Panama in the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship. Antony Lozano converted a Martinez corner kick in the third minute, Martinez doubled the lead in the 25th and then had a hand in Alexander Lopez's insurance tally in the 54th to send "Los Catrachos" to Wednesday's knockout round with a second win in as many games. Rowe paces United States U-20s past PanamaGUATEMALA CITY - Kelyn Rowe scored twice in the first 18 minutes and the United States cruised into the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Under-20 Championship with a 2-0 victory over Panama on Saturday. Both teams already were assured of places in the knockout round. The American victory finished it atop Group B with six points from two games, earning it a meeting on Wednesday with the runner-up from Group A - either host Guatemala or Honduras.
