FIVE PLAYERS WILL NOT BE BACK WITH THE IMPACT IN 2011MONTREAL – The Montreal Impact announced Thursday that five players will not return next season. The club will not offer new contracts to forward Eduardo Sebrango, midfielder Patrick Leduc, as well as defender Wesley Charles. Midfielders Rocco Placentino and Filipe Soares will also be left off the roster for 2011. “These are difficult decisions to make considering the players involved, but we have to think about the club’s future with MLS only 17 months away,” noted Impact technical director Nick De Santis. “The 2011 season will be a very critical transition year and we need to go in a different direction. We want to give more playing time to our younger players, who will be surrounded by a majority of players who could play in MLS. I would like to thank all of these players for their valuable contribution to the Impact over the last few years. We are currently looking at various options for them in the future. » www.montrealimpact.com/News/News.aspx?language=EN&ArticleID=1513&Focus=0

DEFENDER HICHAM AABOUBOU RETURNS IN 2011MONTREAL – The Montreal Impact announced Thursday that central defender Hicham Aaboubou has agreed to a new one-year deal with the club. Aaboubou, a 31-year-old Canadian resident and native of Morocco, will play his fourth season with the Impact in 2011. After playing just 17 matches in 2007 and 2009, Aaboubou solidified his spot on the team’s defensive line last season. In 2010, he played 24 regular season matches, all as a starter (2,123 minutes), reaching the 2,000-minute mark for the first time in his career with Montreal. He also played the full 90 minutes in four playoff matches and two Nutrilite Canadian Championship matches. “After the season he had last year, Hicham deserved to be back in 2011,” declared Impact technical director Nick De Santis. “When Cédric Joqueviel and Stefano Pesoli left the team during the season, he played a very important role. Hicham demonstrated a high level of professionalism and has always been loyal to our club.” “We will have experience at central defense with the return of Nevio (Pizzolitto) and Hicham, which is important at that position,” added De Santis. “With the addition of a young central defender, we would be in excellent shape at that spot in 2011.” “Being a Montrealer, I’m very happy to be staying with the Impact for another season,” said Aaboubou. “I think I proved myself in 2010 and showed everyone that I have my place on this team. My objective is to have another good season in 2011 and prove that I can follow the team into MLS, but I’m not looking to skip any steps. What I want is to win championships this coming season." Team captain Nevio Pizzolitto accepted a one-year deal for 2011 on January 5. The Impact now has a total of 13 players under contract for this season, the club’s final campaign in second division. www.montrealimpact.com/News/News.aspx?language=EN&ArticleID=1538&Focus=0

Impact Sign Bill GaudetteThe Montreal Impact announced on Saturday the signing of American goalkeeper Bill Gaudette for the 2011 season. Gaudette, a 29-year-old American originally from Pennsylvania, wore the colours of the Puerto Rico Islanders over the last three seasons. In 2010, he took the Islanders to its first ever playoff championship, defeating the Carolina RailHawks in the final. “We wanted a top level goalkeeper that had experience in our league and is capable of filling the void left by the retirement of Matt Jordan,” said sporting director Nick De Santis. “He did really well for the Islanders, taking them all the way to the championship. At 29, he is a player with personality, leadership and the potential to continue improving his game. We hope he will carry on the tradition we have here of great goalkeeping.” In 2008, his first season with the Islanders, he helped Puerto Rico win the regular season championship and was named the league’s goalkeeper of the year. Gaudette also led the Islanders to the semi-final round of the CONCACAF Champions League tournament in 2009. He was a first round selection (9th overall) by the Columbus Crew in the 2005 Major League Soccer (MLS) draft, playing 17 games with the Crew during the 2006 and 2007 campaigns. Before going pro, Gaudette played at the university level for St. John’s, where he amassed a 43-13-12 record. Over that same period, he donned the jersey of the Brooklyn Knights of the Premier Development League (PDL). Gaudette, who is now the 19th player under contract with the Impact for the 2011 season in the NASL, will travel with the team to Phoenix, Arizona. www.nasl.com/article/impact-sign-bill-gaudette

Joey Saputo: “I want to be vigilant as a viewer in order to dissect how the Whitecaps did things" This extra attention can also explained by the fact that, unless one lives on Mars, all Quebecers know that the Impact will follow in the footsteps of the Whitecaps in one year and will then become the 19th MLS franchise and the third Canadian club to play in North America’s premiere league. Therefore, all elements are in place for members of the Montreal Impact to feel keyed up for the clash between the Reds and the Caps, whether they be the owner, the executive vice president, the director of soccer operations, an assistant coach or a player. President Joey Saputo is also excited to watch the historical duel between Vancouver and Toronto. “I want to be vigilant as a viewer in order to dissect the differences between how the Whitecaps did things as members of the second division and how they went about creating the best first impression for their fans now that they are in a new league and a new stadium." Dissecting the "show" in a visual sense is one thing, but practically, administrative issues will also be a focal point when Joey Saputo watches the game. "As we will want to do better next year than what has been done in the past, I'll pay attention to many details,” he says. “For example, how will the Whitecaps engage their new fans, their 15,000 season ticket holders, in order to encourage them to return? How will they give visibility to their business partners?" www.montrealimpact.com/News/News.aspx?language=EN&ArticleID=1571&Focus=0
