Montreal Impact announce defender Nelson Rivas has signed a new deal, will return for 2014Nelson Rivas was the first player signed by the Montreal Impact in MLS in 2011, and he will remain with the club at least one more season. The club announced Friday that the defender signed a new contract with the Impact. Per MLS policy, details of the deal were not disclosed. Rivas, 30, missed all of the 2013 regular season with a knee injury that required surgery. He did play in Montreal's lone playoff game last season, somewhat surprisingly getting the starting nod in a 3-0 loss to the Houston Dynamo. The Colombian played 11 regular-season games in his first season with the Impact, 2012. Prior to joining the team, he played at a number of clubs in Europe and South America, including Italian giants Inter Milan and Argentine powerhouse River Plate www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2014/01/17/montreal-impact-announce-defender-nelson-rivas-has-signed-new-deal-will-retu

Montreal Impact say imminent signing of forward Santiago Gonzalez will fall under Special Discovery MONTREAL – Uruguayan forward Santiago González will not fill the Montreal Impact’s third and final Designated Player spot when he signs. González, who was at Impact training on Thursday but did not take part in the session or address the media, will be a Special Discovery signing when the Impact officialize the deal, Montreal sporting director Nick De Santis told reporters on Thursday. González will travel with the team to Florida in the meantime, and De Santis is hopeful that the deal can materialize in the coming days. The little-known Special Discovery rule is not a new one, said De Santis, who cited Real Salt Lake’s acquisition of Olmes García in 2013 as an example of its application. www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2014/02/13/montreal-impact-say-imminent-signing-forward-santiago-gonzalez-will-fall-und

Report: Montreal Impact in Designated Player talks with Argentine midfielder Ignacio PiattiMONTREAL – A player with the last name Piatti was once again linked to the Montreal Impact. Only the first name has changed. According to a tweet sent out by TSN 690’s Tony Marinaro on Monday, Argentinean attacking midfielder Ignacio Piatti will join the Impact as a Designated Player in June. The Impact declined to publicly comment on the report, but MLSsoccer.com has learned that Montreal has indeed been negotiating to bring in such a summer recruit. Signs of the potential signing came in early February, when various sources reported that Valencia’s Pablo Piatti would join Montreal. While the club quickly denied the rumor, Ignacio Piatti’s name surfaced over the next couple of days, which gave rise to the probability of a case of mistaken identity. Ignacio Piatti, 29, is a technically adept, versatile attacking midfielder with experience playing in France, Italy and his native Argentina. He currently plies his trade at San Lorenzo, winners of the Torneo Inicial of Argentina’s first division www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2014/03/24/report-montreal-impact-designated-player-talks-argentine-midfielder-ignacio-
