Rumor Central: Canada to host US in WCQ tuneup? The Canadian Soccer Association is set to make a few big announcements on Thursday, but who saw this one coming? Rumors are that the CSA will not only announce the sites for Canada's World Cup Qualifying matches on Thursday, but it appears they'll also drop the news that Canada will host the US sometime in a friendly tuneup before the qualifiers. The US - who beat Canada in Detroit during the group stage of the CONCACAF Gold Cup last summer - have not played in Canada since a 3-0 win in Vancouver in 1997. The Canucks lead the series 6-3-1 in matches played in Canada all-time, dating back to 1925. US to face rivals Canada in Toronto friendly on June 3The match, which will be televised live in the US on NBC Sports Network at 7 pm ET, will also serve as the final tune-up for both squads ahead of the third round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2014 World Cup. “First of all, we are honored to be chosen to be part of Canada's Centenary celebration,” US head coach Jurgen Klinsmann said in a statement. “This is exactly the type of challenge we are looking for as we grow the team and get ready for the start of World Cup qualifying. There is a great history in the rivalry, and Canada is a team we could see in the final round of qualifying. Stone-Cold Stunner Dempsey scores as US notch a huge upset win over ItalyThe US national team produced their first-ever win against Italy thanks to Clint Dempsey’s second-half strike in a 1-0 win at Stadio Luigi Ferraris in Genoa on Wednesday. The pivotal moment came in the 55th minute when Fabian Johnson whipped in a teasing ball that Jozy Altidore laid off superbly for the on-rushing Dempsey, who drilled his shot hard and low past the despairing dive of Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon. The win marks the first time the US have defeated Italy in 11 attempts since the nations first met 82 years ago. It also marks the first time Italy have lost in Genoa since 1924. www.mlssoccer.com/matchcenter/2012-02-29-ita-v-usa/recapwww.youtube.com/watch?v=jCW61Eycwps&feature=youtu.be

Here? Just a friendly In Italy? A fiascoHere in the US we're fed a steady diet of "don't get too worked up about friendly wins." And it's sound advice that goes all the way back to the 3-6-1 thrashing of Austria in the lead-up to the 1998 World Cup. In Italy, though, they are a bit more... passionate. Or uncompromising. Or irrational. However you want to put it, the Italian press is, in the wake of the US' 1-0 win over the Azzuri on Wednesday, showing the fight and engagement that both the players and fans in Genoa clearly lacked (the crowd, I think we can all agree, was terrible). La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Italian soccer bible, called the US win "A fiasco." And it gets more colorful from there. www.mlssoccer.com/blog/post/2012/02/29/here-just-friendly-italy-fiasco

The number of call-ups allow Klinsmann the flexibility of managing a roster that features eight players who are one caution card away from suspension. The roster is expected to be pared down following the two international friendlies. Due to outstanding club commitments (playoffs, domestic and continental cup competitions), several players will be late arrivals into camp. The US national team’s record-setting winning streak is well intact, and Jozy Altidore’s summer just keeps getting better and better. Altidore scored three goals and assisted on another in the span of 31 minutes in the second half Wednesday as the Americans rallied from a forgettable start to post a 4-3 win against Bosnia-Herzegovina in an international friendly at Asim Ferhatovic Hase Stadium in Sarajevo. The US have now won 12 matches in a row dating back to a 4-3 win over Germany on June 2, the longest active winning streak in the world and the longest in USMNT history. The result also marked the first time the Americans have ever rallied from a deficit on European soil to post a win, improving their record to 3-2-1 in Europe since head coach Jurgen Klinsmann took over two years ago. www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=lcRfMhuoUak
