Kick Off: Mexico open World Cup playoff series vs. New Zealand with $600 million on the line[/size] Mexico’s big two-game World Cup qualifying playoff series with New Zealand is finally here. Not just big ... huge! If El Tri miss out of the World Cup, it will reportedly cost them $600 million in "TV, merchandise, sponsorship, and other revenue." Mexico coach Miguel Herrera has already revealed his starting lineup, which might be odd except that New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert has revealed the Kiwis' starting XI, too. New Zealand are aiming for their second consecutive World Cup appearance but, to get there, they face a tough task. www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2013/11/13/kick-mexico-open-world-cup-playoff-series-vs-new-zealand-600-million-line

Mexico 5, New Zealand 1 World Cup intercontinental playoff match Backed into a corner by their CONCACAF counterparts since March, Mexico took out eight months of frustrations on New Zealand on Wednesday, just when it counted the most. Paul Aguilar and Raúl Jiménez scored goals eight minutes apart in the first half and Oribe Peralta added two more after the break as a desperate El Tri squad pummeled New Zealand 5-1 in the first leg of the teams’ World Cup intercontinental playoff series at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Former New York Red Bulls defender Rafa Márquez punctuated the win with a goal off a Mexico corner kick in the 83rd minute, his 14th goal with Mexico in his 115th career appearance. www.mlssoccer.com/worldcup/2014/news/article/2013/11/13/mexico-5-new-zealand-1-world-cup-interncontinental-playoff-match-recap

World Cup: Mission accomplished for Mexico boss Miguel Herrera, but will he return to El Tri helm?Temporary Mexican national team head coach Miguel Herrera sounded glad he was in charge of El Tri in New Zealand and not closer to home after Mexico reserved their place in the 2014 World Cup with a 4-2 win on Wednesday over the All Whites. The Club América boss – who rejoins his club and now has no official ties to the national team – admitted that the playoff against New Zealand was a world away from the tough CONCACAF battles that former coaches José Manuel “Chepo” de la Torre and Víctor Manuel Vucetich encountered in their stints as coach in World Cup qualifying. www.mlssoccer.com/worldcup/2014/news/article/2013/11/20/world-cup-mission-accomplished-mexico-boss-miguel-herrera-will-he-return-el-

Mexico announce trio of friendlies, including vs. Portugal on June 6 at Gillette StadiumMexico and Portugal are hoping to make a mark at the World Cup this summer. But first, they are going to test their mettle against each other on American soil. Both countries announced friendlies in the United States in June, including a meeting of the two nations June 6 at Gilette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. With Portugal set to face the US national team in group play in Brazil, the tune-up will give both teams a chance to face off against World Cup-caliber competition. Mexico will play two more World Cup entrants: Ecuador on May 31 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas; and June 3 at Chicago's Soldier Field against Bosnia and Herzegovina, their final preparations for the tournament. www.mlssoccer.com/worldcup/2014/news/article/2014/02/14/world-cup-mexico-announce-trio-friendlies-ahead-world-cup-including-game-vs-
